Waku Ghin – Dinner – Singapore

Tetsuyas, many, many years ago, was my first fine dining experience and I absolutely loved it. I know Waku Ghin has been open for a while (and currently ranked 39th best restaurant in the world according to Restaurant Magazine) but I balked at have to pay >50% more in Singapore than his Australian degustation.

However, I was feeling a bit of a splurge coming on so I thought, why not?

Plus I did want to go check out Marina Bay Sands complex (I’m on a boat, yeah!)

9 course degustation PLUS 9 circus acts for $99 (sort of – excluding an admin fee from Ticketek)…

Food & circus – a match made in heaven – I was definitely not going to miss out on this.

Ringmaster/mistress giving us the lowdown

I won’t go into too much detail about the circus acts so I won’t ruin the surprise should you choose to attend but there were a variety of acts including trapeze, juggling and hoola hoops.

It can get a bit risquĆ© so I wouldn’t bring anyone on the conservative side (it’s Oxford St so I doubt you would be here without knowing what you were getting into).

Before leaving for a 2 month overseas holiday, I decided to meet up with a few friends for a lovely dinner at Oscillate Wildly – a Japanese/French fusion restaurant. It is a very inventive restaurant with creative uses of different flavours & textures.

OMFG!!!!! Never in my life have I had such a FANTASTIC dining experience as that at Fat Duck Restaurant in Bray, England. Heston Blumenthal is an absolute genius & I would shout it from the rooftops if that would help me get another reservation.

Top 3 restaurant in the WORLD in 2010, it’s consistently been one of the best restaurants in the world and an absolute must on my recent trip to Europe.

This was, by far, the best restaurant I’ve ever been to in my entire life (so far).

After a 5 min cab ride from Maidenhead train station, the 4 of us arrive at the Fat Duck Restaurant, all ready to have a culinary experience of a lifetime.

Marque Restaurant – Lunch – Degustation – Sydney

Posted in 1 - Laudable :D, Cuisine, Degustation/Tasting, European, French, Lunch, Meal Type, Price, Restaurants, Super Splurge (>$30), Surry Hills, Sydney with tags , , , , , , on February 12, 2011 by Monitor Muncher

I’ve always wanted to go to Marque restaurant and what better option than to take off on a Friday and enjoy a phenomenal lunch.

When chefs become famous, there’s this temptation to open 20 restaurants, write books & be on tv constantly – basically to get away from the restaurant & the cooking that made you famous.

But not at Marque, as we walked in, Mark Best was behind the counter doing the kitchen service – it’s so nice to see a chef be a chef.

When I initially made the reservation, I was told there was no degustation at the Friday lunch, just the special 3 course lunch deal šŸ˜¦

Fortunately, the person I was talking to was wrong. Unfortunately, the booking I made (thinking there was no degustation) was for 2 hours.

Anyway, I can’t fault the food – that’s for sure. Below is the 4 course $95 lunch degustation at Marque (they were also offering an 8 course degustation for lunch but I could only fit so much in 2 hours).

A special occasion – a family member’s birthday and after watching some of Luke Nguyen’s tv show, I thought Red Lantern would be the perfect place for a birthday celebration.

I’ve actually walked past Red Lantern a few times and not known it was there. I had it in the back of my mind that it was further down the street.

Assiette ā€“ Friday Lunch Set MenuĀ ā€“ Surry Hills

Assiette is a hatted restaurant in Surry Hills with a Friday lunch set menu of $35 for 3 courses – of course I had to give it a try. The chef there also recently opened a bistro call District Dining if you want a more casual scene.

This was accompanied by a bottle of Escarpment Pinot Noir Martinborough, NZ. I’m not normally a red drinker, but it was a little cold & dreary & I really wanted something that would warm my insides. This red didn’t have the acidic aftertaste that I normally experience & it had a clean, crisp taste which made it the perfect addition to my lunch.

Bread, warm & toasty from the oven

I love fresh baked bread, there’s nothing finer than the simplest of staples fresh from the oven & still piping hot. This bread was simply wonderful, and I consider myself to definitely be a bread/carbs person.

A website had a special on for Sailors Thai’s tasting menu so I rounded up a few peeps and off we went. It was 8 courses for $69 including a glass chardonnay by Ross Hill Wines or pinot noir by Bass Phillip Wines.

It was a bargain, how could I say no?

Chicken & Potato Curry Puff with Cucumber Relish

The starter and it was quite impressive. The curry puff was crunchy, filling excellent and I really dug the relish.
