Sydney Uyghur Cuisine – Dinner – Surry Hills

I’m always up for trying new things and I’d walked past this restaurant several times with a mind to go in next time I’m around for dinner. I’ve had Chinese food before (who hasn’t?), but not from this muslim ethnic group in China (and other areas in Central Asia). That means there will be no sweet & sour pork on the menu.

First up, how to pronounce Uyghur? We ask the waiter of this family restaurant and he says ‘wee-gur’.

The decor is very bright

Cafe Mint – Dinner – Surry Hills

You know what I love about Melbourne? Small bars. I get a bit excited if I see anything similar in Sydney.

So walking around Crown St in Sydney on a Thursday night, I was surprised to see Cafe Mint as I hadn’t seen it before. Incidentally, it has been here a while (*cough* nearly a decade *cough*), but I had just not noticed it until now.

It’s a Middle Eastern place and it’s got a nice, comfortable feel. The menu looks interesting, but won’t rock the boat. I was really excited hoping it would be another find like the wonderful Almond Bar in Darlinghurst. Continue reading

The Nepalese Kitchen – Dinner – Surry Hills

I was actually excited before I went here. I wanted to broaden the horizons of my taste buds and try foods of a different nationality.

Unfortunately, this place was rather disappointing – but it’s always crowded when I go past so maybe I just caught it on a bad day?

Today was no different, the place was packed with an uncomfortable sardine feeling, my dining companion constantly had her chair/head bumped as customers and the wait staff tried to get by behind her seat.

Mango Lassi – $4

A little something to start off with. It was okay, there were a lot of spices in this drink in their whole form so I had issues either getting it up the straw or I would get too overwhelming a flavour in certain mouthfuls.

Tabou – Dinner – Surry Hills (Closed)

I was here in Feb 2011 and since then, this place is no longer in business. It was strange, the website is still working and there are still chairs & tables inside.

*sigh*

It was good and I had yet to try the dessert menu so I was very much looking forward to returning but alas!

Complimentary Baguette

You know a place is going to be fantastic when all you want to do is eat the bread all day.

Such soft, fluffy interior with a lovely crunch on the outside – I wish I could bake bread this good. After we had devoured the bread, our waiter asked us if we wanted more & though we had several dishes to get through, I couldn’t help but say yes please.

A special occasion – a family member’s birthday and after watching some of Luke Nguyen’s tv show, I thought Red Lantern would be the perfect place for a birthday celebration.

I’ve actually walked past Red Lantern a few times and not known it was there. I had it in the back of my mind that it was further down the street.

The Devonshire (Formerly The Smokehouse) – Dinner – Surry Hills

Please Note: The Smokehouse is now The Devonshire with a new menu – take this review with a grain of salt.

This is a cute little place, came here on a Thursday night so not so busy. The novelty that attracted me was that it was a restaurant selling naturally hand-smoked seafood.

The decor is really nice, everything has a rustic/vintage feel to it.

Such quaint decor – I wonder if the piano worked?

There’s an old cash register to the right which ding-ed when the buttons were pushed (yes, we childishly played with it).

Assiette – Friday Lunch Set Menu – Surry Hills

Assiette is a hatted restaurant in Surry Hills with a Friday lunch set menu of $35 for 3 courses – of course I had to give it a try. The chef there also recently opened a bistro call District Dining if you want a more casual scene.

This was accompanied by a bottle of Escarpment Pinot Noir Martinborough, NZ. I’m not normally a red drinker, but it was a little cold & dreary & I really wanted something that would warm my insides. This red didn’t have the acidic aftertaste that I normally experience & it had a clean, crisp taste which made it the perfect addition to my lunch.

Bread, warm & toasty from the oven

I love fresh baked bread, there’s nothing finer than the simplest of staples fresh from the oven & still piping hot. This bread was simply wonderful, and I consider myself to definitely be a bread/carbs person.

Sushi Suma Japanese Restaurant – Surry Hills (Wretch!) :(

😦

Two thumbs down from this place because they (allegedly) gave me food poisoning.

This place is always busy when I go by so I thought I’d stop in after doing my Thursday sports. There was actually a line up when I got there, about 5 people (2 groups) were there when I got there about 9pm.  The food was…not fantastic and I was definitely disliking it 3am that night when I had to go purge my system. 😦

Just in case it wasn’t the sashimi, this is my opinion of the place before I was ill.
