Eat Art Truck – roving food truck – Sydney

So not too long ago, Sydney started trialling gourmet late night food trucks including food purveyed by those with impressive culinary pedigrees.

The first one I tried was Eat Art Truck which is run by 2 chefs – one formerly of Tetsuyas & one formerly of Quay. And they did not disappoint.

Theirs is an Asian fusion & western style option. These aren’t no ordinary kebab trucks, they come with state of the art induction cooktops and are custom designed for the truck.

Sydney Uyghur Cuisine – Dinner – Surry Hills

Posted in 2 - Loveable :), Asian (East), Budget Bite (<$15), Chinese, Cuisine, Dinner, Lunch, Price, Restaurants, Surry Hills, Sydney, Uyghur with tags , , , , , , on July 22, 2012 by Monitor Muncher

I’m always up for trying new things and I’d walked past this restaurant several times with a mind to go in next time I’m around for dinner. I’ve had Chinese food before (who hasn’t?), but not from this muslim ethnic group in China (and other areas in Central Asia). That means there will be no sweet & sour pork on the menu.

First up, how to pronounce Uyghur? We ask the waiter of this family restaurant and he says ‘wee-gur’.

The decor is very bright

El Circo, Slide Bar – Dinner – Darlinghurst

9 course degustation PLUS 9 circus acts for $99 (sort of – excluding an admin fee from Ticketek)…

Food & circus – a match made in heaven – I was definitely not going to miss out on this.

Ringmaster/mistress giving us the lowdown

I won’t go into too much detail about the circus acts so I won’t ruin the surprise should you choose to attend but there were a variety of acts including trapeze, juggling and hoola hoops.

It can get a bit risqué so I wouldn’t bring anyone on the conservative side (it’s Oxford St so I doubt you would be here without knowing what you were getting into).

Baroque Bistro – The Rocks

Ah, The Rocks, lovely place, good view, great atmosphere. There’s a patisserie that I love called La Renaissance. Any cakes I need made, this is my go-to place.

So when I heard they opened a bistro, I was always eager to give it a go.

Plus, if I crave a late night macaroon, I can get my fix here.

And there’s also a view of the bridge too if you’re interested.

Now here’s a place that I’m regularly refused entry to. No salacious history here or anything, they’re just usually booked out when I’m wandering around Glebe Pt Rd trying to find a bite.

Cafe Mint – Dinner – Surry Hills

Posted in 3 - Likeable :|, Cuisine, Mega Meal ($20-$30), Middle Eastern, Price, Restaurants, Surry Hills, Sydney with tags , , , , , , on July 27, 2011 by Monitor Muncher

You know what I love about Melbourne? Small bars. I get a bit excited if I see anything similar in Sydney.

So walking around Crown St in Sydney on a Thursday night, I was surprised to see Cafe Mint as I hadn’t seen it before. Incidentally, it has been here a while (*cough* nearly a decade *cough*), but I had just not noticed it until now.

It’s a Middle Eastern place and it’s got a nice, comfortable feel. The menu looks interesting, but won’t rock the boat. I was really excited hoping it would be another find like the wonderful Almond Bar in Darlinghurst. Continue reading

Chophouse (Steakhouse Restaurant) – Dinner – Sydney

If you’re feeling particularly carnivorous, then Chophouse is a great place to go – the steaks here are superb.

The decor is also very interesting, it looks like they’ve spent a lot of money making the place look cheap inside. There’s a bit of a run-down, wild west feel to it.

And let’s not forget the cow skull chandelier above the bar.

The Nepalese Kitchen – Dinner – Surry Hills

I was actually excited before I went here. I wanted to broaden the horizons of my taste buds and try foods of a different nationality.

Unfortunately, this place was rather disappointing – but it’s always crowded when I go past so maybe I just caught it on a bad day?

Today was no different, the place was packed with an uncomfortable sardine feeling, my dining companion constantly had her chair/head bumped as customers and the wait staff tried to get by behind her seat.

Mango Lassi – $4

A little something to start off with. It was okay, there were a lot of spices in this drink in their whole form so I had issues either getting it up the straw or I would get too overwhelming a flavour in certain mouthfuls.

Tabou – Dinner – Surry Hills (Closed)

Posted in 1 - Laudable :D, Cuisine, Dinner, European, French, Meal Type, Price, Restaurants, Super Splurge (>$30), Surry Hills, Sydney with tags , , , , , , , on June 16, 2011 by Monitor Muncher

I was here in Feb 2011 and since then, this place is no longer in business. It was strange, the website is still working and there are still chairs & tables inside.

*sigh*

It was good and I had yet to try the dessert menu so I was very much looking forward to returning but alas!

Complimentary Baguette

You know a place is going to be fantastic when all you want to do is eat the bread all day.

Such soft, fluffy interior with a lovely crunch on the outside – I wish I could bake bread this good. After we had devoured the bread, our waiter asked us if we wanted more & though we had several dishes to get through, I couldn’t help but say yes please.

Maybe I’m just a food voyeur, but I do like going to places where you can watch the chefs work their magic.

I guess, it also lets you know that nothing untoward is happening to your meal (or they’re not just opening packets/cans & microwaving it).

Here at Chefs Gallery, you can actually watch them make your noodles for your meal.
